My first clue that something was going on with Deloitte were the influx of Google searches for everything from “Deloitte layoffs” to “Deloitte layoffs 2008″ to “Deloitte layoff” to “KPMG” to “Deloitte Touche” and more.

My daughter was laid off in Columbus Ohio — there were 10 laid off altogether. She was told there were 700 laid off nationwide. Why didn’t that news make it into the blogs?

An email and a visit to HR and it was over for over 200 people.
One female partner (Irish in NY) threw most of her staff under the bus to save her bacon.
Lucky for me she hired me..

Leadership kept hiring and telling people things are good and now they have shattered people’s dreams.
Why do they do this to people, why did they even high people as of September? It’s unfortunate- typical of corporate America but I thought Deloitte would be different

They have been quietly laying off people for almost a year now. Numerous layoffs out of the Dallas office over the past months. Some has to do with AS5 changes and being overstaffed. Some has to do with being out of touch with the local marketplace needs, rates too high, traveling people too much, etc. Can’t rape the marketplace forever! Businesses are getting smarter about the rampant wastefulness. Many instances of people being transferred thousands of miles away due to lack of work in their area and THEN being flown right back each week to work on engagements close to their original city and the client foots the travel!!!) Who MAKES those decisions????? Oh..and with the new financial failures go take a look at which clients are D&T’s!

Got laid off on 13-Oct…quietly. People are getting very ordinary severance packages. Was here for 2 years, Was billable 95% of the time. I don’t know what they were thinking when they were hiring like mad just few months back.

Even though I had moved out deloitte sometime back, I am still in touch with all my colleagues from the past 5 years at Deloitte…. This week (10/13) my ex-colleagues called me with the official announcement of the huge lay-offs from the leadership call from the consulting practice (EA, TI specifically) and the leadership clearly mentioned that anyone who is willing to transfer to India would not be impacted by the layoffs… Wow.. what can I say in a year when the partner stakes went up from an average 750K to upwards of 1M…. No wonder??

No proper planning in Deloitte….
They want us to do all “extra” work apart from client work …..and are never satisfied with us…. I wish partners did some work in getting proposals and tried to keep us staffed ….
sometimes they staff us on projects which has nothing to do with our technology…
Why dont they fire partners who couldn’t get projects ….

The Big 4 is soon becoming a relic and an icon for hypocrasy.
Change is coming due to market forces.
I was with Deloitte for 4 years in asia, straight out of college. It’s a puppy mill.
The ethical leave, the greedy stay.
I saw behind the curtain as an expat privy to many things. I ate the hours, got the t-shirt and the “name brand” references for the resume, and walked away with my dignity, and a new appreciation for the value of time.
My advice:
1.) Watch the old movie “Wall Street”.
2.) Listen to the Eagles song “In a New York Minute”.
3.) Know that in private industry, humanity comes second.
4.) Remember that life is short, make the most of time with friends, family and the things you love to do. You’ll find that time is the most valueable asset you have
5.) Lastly, you really don’t need a huge amount of money to be happy. If you think you need a lot, you have a hard, lonely road ahead of you where you’ll most likely have to sellout and cross the line and get dirty at some point, leading to sleepless nights and hanging with people you don’t really like and can’t trust.

No surprised to hear you guys saying bad things about Deloitte… lets face it they would have removed the weakest staff first so no doubt you are bitter.
Deloitte is a great place to work and they have had to make some pretty tough choices over the past year. Remember you CHOSE a career at Deloitte and if you have been laid off it will be Deloitte on your CV that helps you get a new job.
It is beneath anyone to start to say bad things about a company that put food in their mouths for many years.

it makes sense if Deloitte fired people who are under utilized. But only if Deloitte had enough projects there would have been no question of under utilization….Its because of lack of projects that many of its employees are under utilized..
No one puts food free of cost…All these people who got fired did serve Deloitte and its clients…

HOW DARE YOU SAY THE WEAKEST STAFF WAS LAID OFF FIRST – my ratings were all 2s and I was a first year! It was all about salary, accumulated severance and possibly accumulated PTO – I was there for a year and everyone who was hired at around the same time as me was laid off – BECAUSE WE ONLY HAD ACCUMULATED ONE MONTH OF SEVERANCE!
Also, they lied about giving us our PTO (vacation/ sick days) as part of the severance package – they told us that they would also give us all of our remaining days of PTO – they failed to mention it was accumulated days only, which stopped being accumulated the day you were laid off, so they screwed me out of 12 days, which would be about $3500. Payroll mysteriously keeps making mistakes with my severance, giving me less than my regular pay, and I am fighting for every penny that they give me.
And, for agreeing to an extra two weeks of severance, we all had to sign waivers against suing them.
Plus, they STILL HAVEN’T REIMBURSED ME FOR MY FINAL EXPENSES!!!!!
Yeah, Deloitte is a great company, you must feel really good about yourself for surviving the first few rounds of layoffs because you must be so great at your job – keep dreaming, drinking their cool-aid, and wearing their tee shirts – they are treating the people laid off with absolutely no class. I can’t wait to see how YOU feel when they lay you off in the upcoming months – because more layoffs are coming – Barry’s letter of September 23 confirmed that – it was sent out to conform with WARN requirements – I hope you like the feeling – lets see how you get over it – I hope someone calls you weak – keep dreaming.
The classless way that it was done – many of us (including me) had just received a raise a few weeks prior and was assured constantly that no layoffs would occur. Without warning, walked into work one morning and was told to be out ASAP and give me your computer back ASAP, just after getting a raise.
DO NOT WORK FOR THIS COMPANY!!!! THEY ARE DISHONEST!!!!

I still wonder why they did so much new analyst recruiting this year – despite the economy being so sluggish. Was given a 2 hour notice to turn in my laptop, pda and all that crap..*&*&&%^%
Worst part, I am on a work visa here and now its being so tough, coz a lot of the companies are refusing to even transfer H1s!:(

Sales people from Merck that were laid off last year with the same time served as me got 5 or 6 months severance – I was only offered one. Deloitte didn’t even have the courtesy to give us the severance package that would be equivalent to a salesman (no offense to any sales people out there), and then they call themselves “the place the best want to be.”
They have shown themselves to be the true nickel and dime that they are. Classless. Good luck getting the expenses reimbursed – they think everyone is afraid to sue them. Watch and make sure they are giving you the correct amount of severance to.

I got laid off and I’m on H1 B and I was told that I had 1 month time to transfer my H1 but I did the transfer in 15 days..There are some Indian companies in “Dice.com ” (ABEAM consultancy, Quantum integrators, Specweaver ) which will transfer H1. They will charge you aroud 2000- 2500 $ and these companies usually refund the H1 transfer fee once we get a project and we are with the company for atleast 6 months.

Its interesting to see the opinions of many people who have been laid-off!!
To begin with, its the same people who at one point want to work for Deloitte….and should have understood that the emplyee and employer are engaged in business for profit. How many of you are really really loyal that you would have not left the compant at all forever? Come on…get real and move on…..
For all those on H1B- I hope you realize that you have been given the visa for your ’speciality skills’ and ’skills in demand’. If all of the were good and qualified, they should not have difficulty in finding another job.
Believe me…I have the seen the quality of people who were let go, it really sucks….

Wow, I can’t believe the amount of people here who think people at Deloitte are let go only because of their skill level. No politics, right? None at all? It couldn’t be that a senior manager or recruiting partner get extra incentive for hiring people at local Universities that have to stay for a certain amount of time to get the extra money? Right? Quit being hypocritical. Also, and I do mean more importantly, if you think you are immune to being laid off you need to take a big look in the mirror. Better still, just go on a lunch with your partner, ask him if you can become a partner or go to Wilton and see what they say. If they say nothing, guess what you will be asked to go on a sabatical somewhere between manager and senior manager.
Life lesson: Don’t make fun at the misfortune of others. There is no one above an AXX whoopin. As for those let go, have faith, Deloitte trained you to be better than the vast majority of other people in the market. You will profit from this. I went from a pathetic 60K a year to 100K right out of the job working only 40 hours a week.

you can legally stay in the US 30 days after the termination date to transfer your H1 to another firm. They also are responsible in providing you a plane ticket. Got laid off too yesterday, but from kpmg. that’s what i was told by HR. sucks.

Deloitte will pay for the return ticket if you decided to go back to the country where you are from. As for how much time is allowed, there is no rule for it; the immigration law is not very clear here for those who are terminated while on H1b and who are looking for another employment. It’s better to find a job ASAP, and some people think that it’s safe to transfer the visa within 30 days after your layoff date.
After you transfer the visa, it’s possible that the immigration office may not approve an extension of H1-b, even though they usually approve h1-b transfer itself, in which case you have to go to the US-Embassy outside the US and get the extension approved there and return to the US with a new visa stamp.
Let me share my experience.
I was on H1-b and was laid off by Uncle-D at the end of August with 4 weeks pay and 2 weeks additional pay upon signing a waiver.
I found a new job and file a transfer on 29 or 30th day after the termination. Started working at the new company 3 weeks after I filed the transfer. As of this date, I am still waiting for their response, which I was told to take about 3 or 4 months. My immigration attorney told me that the worst thing that can happen to me right now is that they do not approve my visa extension and that i will have to go out of the US to get my extension approved at US embassy.

Hi! I just got a job offer from Deloitte…I am still trying to decide whether I should sign it…specially after reading about the layoffs. Its very sad to hear that they are laying off people…yet they are still hiring full time staff. Did Deloitte decide to let go of certain people based on performance? Would it be safer for me to work as an auditor in a smaller firm or should I just go to industry all together? Please…any piece of advice will help! Thanks!

Deloitte laid off 17 partners in Russia and 50% of the workforce in other CIS countries in shameful and quit way.
They are saying they are laying off people, because they are not so goood, performance was not good, although reason is obvious for everyone. Economic Crisis. It is shameful that they are trying to fire people, without paying compensations.

Haha, I was laid off June 3rd and I was so relieved. I was a 3rd year and the only thing good about that job was granted the professional growth and the time off. I literally started hating my life and my industry because of it I feel that i deserved to get laid off as I was a crap public accountant all in all, but i’m truly glad i was able to suck them dry and skip out on some of the sacrifices some of my friends made for this place.

I was let go in Late Oct. Over 10yrs service, I wonder in it has to do with the fact that we were scheduled to start our pension upswing, The IT dept is horribly run, 6 levels of clueless mgmt, all protecting their own, no wonder the real workers left several years back. But hey spend another 70 million on SAP, that will fix it.

I was part of an old layoff with Deloitte back in 1999 after the Y2K scare stopped being profitable. Luckily at the time I already had a job lined up, so I took the 6 month severance and said good-bye. I felt that my layoff was due to the fact that I didn’t kiss up to the Partners, etc.. Just not my cup of tea. After several years of doing SAP on my own, I am back with Deloitte and very happy. Work from home 98% of the time and really don’t have any complaints. Our area is extremely busy and short-staffed and we still have 3rd party contractors on staff. I figure that as long as they are around, I am safe! :) It’s easy to become bitter, but use that energy to look for something better. No job is forever, especially in this economic disaster.

I have seen Deloitte Consulting going down the drain over last 3 years. They call themselves Big 4 because of their Audit division. Deloitte Consulting is the next “Bearing Point”. Everyone has noticed that over the years. There are no projects. There is no work. Bearing Point atleast has good share of work in Federal world, Deloitte doesn’t. Their share is less than $160 million.
They have also lost most of the cliens in the commercial space. It is surviving exclusively on State Government projects from PA, CA , FL, TX. Their Technology Integration division is a piece of joke over the years.
Also remember that Deloitte is a partnership firm, they don’t have any obligation to be true to the people. All the $ profit figures that are provided to you every Friday in the newsletter are sort of fake.
I was asked to leave inspite of getting the promotion this year with 10% raise and having very good rating through out the stay. I was planning to leave in 2 weeks anyways. I collected severance for 16 + 4 weeks and PTO. Got a lot of cash at one shot.
Guys.. Move on. Care for your career. Get a job in better company. You are not missing anything if are laid off from the Consulting division. You will find gr8 opportunities outside and you will actually do some meaningful & tangible work.

True..Deloitte being a patnership has no obligations and do whatever they want to do… It is run like a shop not an organisation.. Atleast publicaly listed companies announce a layoff not do silent coward layyoffs like Deloitte did… And 401k of Deloitte sucks ..sucks .. People who stay there long term will eventually end up losing a lot..

I agree with the frustration you have as Deloitte laying off. I would have felt the same If I was laid too. My friend is laid off on Aug ‘08 in Hyd Deloitte Office. She is from AERS (Audit) Group in Hyderabad. She is doing a great job in her team with multiple tasks. To my surprise many North Indian girls(from Some college) are hired with high(double CTC) pay who where so dumb they don’t know basic things about Excel nor the subject. There should be a serious action against Deloitte Audit managers and HR’s.

I was laid off early November from the Consulting division. Being on Work Visa is such a pain to find other opportunities. Deloitte was being very inconsiderate in choosing this time of the year, to get rid of its employees, given we were clocking 70 hr work weeks and 140% PLUS utilization at the time. I am hoping some job opportunities will open up in the New Years. I hear there is another phase of lay offs in January… So much for the assurance from the leadership that Consulting will ride the 6-month lag wave!

In a wierd way, I can understand why they would lay so many people off…after all its a partnership firm and at the end of the day, it all about Partner’s bonuses. I dont know too many people in the tax practice being laid off..I just hear audit and consulting…I wonder if tax is being affected

Deloitte is not the only company laying off it’s employees. Many companies are making cuts and most companies only care about their upper management. I used to work for Deloitte, in the company’s TNT audit division, and yes Deloitte does foster the environment that most pple are descibing here. Even more disheartening, are the comments made here that suggest that the pple who got laid off ALL deserved it somehow. No one is above being fired, and no one is above a layoff. These hardships can fall on anyone. If we were more willing to help each other and pass job information on instead of bashing one another, we may be able to get a leg up on some of these companies that will hire staff in one month and fire active employees the next. Company’s management stick together, that’s how upper management survives. As employees (and not business owners) we should do the same. Try putting something helpful on the website, vs some putting some idiot comment about what some else deserves. No one “deserves” to be jobless, especially not in this economy. Maybe you will get your turn, and hopefully you’ll meet someone who will show you more kindness than you have shown some these bloggers.

I Was part of 28 Telecom employees laid off on a 3 min. conference call. We were told our jobs were outsourced effective immediately. Told one more time our jobs were outsourced and to contact our managers if we had questions. (best part they knew nothing because the were being “outsourced” too) Then they hung up! I have never been laid off before but I’m sure there is a better way of doing it.
